Job 23:4–6 (ESV): I would lay my case before him
and fill my mouth with arguments.
5 I would know what he would answer me
and understand what he would say to me.
6 Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power?
No, he would pay attention to me.
Some may argue that Job was wrong to say, "I will lay my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments." However, I believe differently. God is a good and loving Father who longs to understand the hearts of his children. He does not always expect perfect words to come out of our mouths when we speak to Him. Not every word we say needs to be "Yes" and "Amen."
As humans, we are flawed and have a heart. Jesus understands this, for He is the High Priest who empathizes with us. The unknown author of Hebrews reminds us to approach the throne of grace boldly, meaning there are no rules when it comes to approaching God. We are to give Him our hearts. Our parents may have required rules when we spoke to them, but God is different.
Job understood this, and that is why he said, "I will know what He will tell me." Similarly, the Word of God speaks volumes into our lives. However, the most beautiful part is that God "will not contend with you. No, He will listen."
There is such beauty in this. I remember the night my brother passed away. I lay on the floor in worship of the Lord, but I also argued my case before God in tears until morning. I may have cursed in my pain, and I may have even said it was a wrong decision. I may have done many things in my prayer before the throne that some may consider a "no." However, at sunrise, I felt the warmth of God pulling me into His presence and comforting me in His grace. When I opened my eyes, my wife was weeping with me. God did not contend against me in my pain. Instead, He embraced me in His grace. God Paid attention and gave hear to my cry.
